Elkton is a town in Cecil County, located in northeastern Maryland. It is 53 miles from Baltimore and 81 miles from Annapolis. The town’s history dates back to the 1600s, when explorer John Smith first landed in the area. Today, it is home to several businesses, including Elk Neck State Forest, Fair Hill State Natural Resources Management Area, and Elk River Brewing Co.

Elk Neck State Forest

Elk Neck State Forest is part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and managed by the Maryland Forest Service. It is located adjacent to the town of North East in Cecil County. Sometimes, this state forest is confused with Elk Neck State Park, which is further south on the same peninsula.

Elk Neck State Park features diverse topography, cliffs, and marshlands. It offers spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Elk River. This state park is a year-round destination for visitors, offering a variety of recreational activities.

The forest’s arboretum trail features 35 species of trees, including 61 newly planted ones. The trail was opened on June 6, 2014. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Cecil County Forestry Board coordinated the project. Visitors can hike, ride horses, or take horseback rides. There are also lessons and boarding services available for those interested in equestrian sports.

Elk Neck State Park is divided into four distinct areas. The Turkey Point Lighthouse Area features a historic light station. The North East Beach Area has a swimming area and a canoe/kayak launch. Visitors to the Rogues Harbor Boat Launch Facility can also enjoy fishing.

Elk Neck State Forest is one of the many places to go in Elkton, MD. You can also go fox chasing on horseback, camp out with organized youth groups, and go hunting seasonally.

Fair Hill State Natural Resources Management Area

Fair Hill State Natural Resources Management Area is a sprawling recreational area. Military veterans receive half off the entry fee and admission is free on Veteran’s Day. Visitors can also fish in the stocked trout stream located at the Fair Hill property. The Fair Hill State Natural Resources Management Area is home to the Maryland 5 Star, a top-level, three-day equestrian competition that evolved from fox hunting and the training of military horses. It has attracted 21,000 spectators and featured competitors from eight countries, including many who competed in the Olympics. The property features a wide variety of habitats and wildlife.

Elk River Brewing Co.

Elk River Brewing Company is a family business with a passion for beer and Cecil County. The owners, Brad and Jessica Carrillo, both grew up in Colorado, where they learned to appreciate the beer culture. They have now settled in Elkton and look forward to making the area a better place to live and drink.

Previously, the downtown of Elkton suffered as county offices and other businesses moved out, and the 2008 recession exacerbated the situation. Thankfully, the Carrillos invested in downtown Elkton to revive the property. They renovated the building that houses the brewery and added charm to the county seat.

The brewery has opened a beer garden and parking lot for food trucks. The owners hope to keep all sixteen taps running and become an important part of the business community. This summer, they plan to hold a Fourth of July event to unite local brewpubs. It takes two to three weeks to brew a batch of beer at Elk River Brewing Co.

The brewery’s location at Industrial Boulevard was a perfect fit for AEGIR. Their new facility features a 98-seat capacity inside as well as 11,000 square feet of outdoor patio space. The brewery also features a dog park.

JoJo’s Super Dogs
